The Le'enle have stages of evolution similar to my stages of discovery. At first I thought they were simply kirin-like people, magical critters but normal ones. Then I realized they could change shape. Then I discovered that their kirin shape was the shape they'd been born to, species-wise, and that they'd evolved out of it into beings that could (and sometimes, if not often did) exist as non-corporeal creatures of tremendous power and tremendously crippling moral laws governing that power. These laws are encoded in their souls and prevent them from acting on a universe that would otherwise be their plaything.
I thought that such creatures would make bad story subjects, given their omnipotence. But their flaws are so extreme they somehow counter-balance their power. Indeed, in most ways they are as helpless as you or I, watching events unfold that not only they can't change, but they know they could if only they could rise above the stringency of the gags that restrain them. There is a bitter poignance to their struggles with the traditions and rules that are ultimately destroying them that makes me revisit them... though never for long.
