Lecture Notes (Health/Food)
2010-08-31
I had a chance to catch part of a lecture on nutrition and health a week ago, where they thoughtfully provided lined paper to take notes.
Naturally I flipped it over and used the blank side to take notes the way I'd remember them, which is how I can look at this sheet and remember that we discussed enzymes, chewing, raw foods, vitamins, juicing, what vitamins are synthesized from, the utility of whole foods, the necessity of protein and fatty acids and the importance of exercise.
Ta-da! -_-

Think, Think!
2010-06-29
She buried that cache of extra tools somewhere, and even made a map. But the map's not helping. As her companion looks on inquisitively, the engineer elf lightly smacks her forehead. 'Think, think! Where was it?'
The finished piece!

OMGPAPERWORK
2010-06-15
From the Three Micahs column on what I wished someone had told me on college, I did this piece about being snowed under with legal paperwork. I really like this one for its iconic quality; when I was drawing it, I remembered my earliest efforts at technical pen work and added a circle behind her with a template "for old times' sake," because back then I'd often just toss in a geometric shape as a fake background to call things done. In this case, though, it really works!

Petals
2010-06-08
I found this half-finished piece from when I was pregnant (three years ago!) and decided to go ahead and finish it... which turned out to be a challenge since apparently 3 years abandoned in the laundry room had coated the paper with a detergent-like surface. It was very hard going getting the paint to stick to it!
Nevertheless, I finished it up and I kind of like how it turned out. So, one of the Le'enle, shedding petals into a storm-darkened world without flowers.

Paperwork Monster
2010-05-20
I think of all the pieces I've done for the Three Micahs column, this one is the most iconic somehow: behind a shield, a woman sallies forth bravely against a dragon made of file folders, post-it notes, papers and envelopes, which is using a junk mail breath weapon against her, spitting bills and envelopes. I especially like the paperclip on the tail there.
This is also, interestingly, the only Three Micahs cartoon so far that could be interpreted as being of a human.

Working Hard!
2010-04-09
The complement to the "Dreamy Artist" cartoon from the Day Jobs column, this one depicts the reality of working as a creative professional: Business Manager is busily keeping accounts, Marketer is lining up gigs and keeping a calendar and Artist is exhausted from overwork. >.>

Parachuting Artist
2010-04-09
Also known as "Squee," this cartoon from the Day Jobs column was my surprise, 'hey, everyone likes this?' cartoon. It does have a certain je ne sais quoi. :)

The Dreamy Artist
2010-04-09
From the Day Jobs column, here's the Dreamy Artist, certain that if she does nothing but put her head down and work on The Art, the money will just fly in and bills will pay themselves! This remains one of my favorite pieces from the Three Micahs column so far.

Eve of the War
2010-02-07
A while back a friend of mine (hi, Kelly!) used a phrase that got stuck in my head: eve of the war. And it's been stuck there for a while. I found this half-finished ACEO-sized card with a gorgeous wash and a white round spot just in the right place for a moon, so I decided to run with it as an ink/gouache experiment: samurai woman standing before the eerily-lit background at dusk.
I really like the simplicity of this one. Thanks for the earworm, Kelly. :)

Father's Prayer (Christmas 2009)
2009-12-24
Many of the cards I see for Christmas focus on Mary and the baby, or the holy family entire. It's much rarer to see Joseph alone with Jesus. But I have had cause lately to see that men love their children quite as much as women, in a way mysterious to women. And so I got to thinking about Joseph, who is surely one of the most famous adoptive fathers. I'm sure he too looked up at the sky and said, "God, I hope I do this right."
So this Christmas, a father's prayer. Merry Christmas, everyone.
