Spots's Lullaby

This illustration for the "Lullaby" episode of Spots was completely unplanned, and in fact I did it before I wrote the scene which means I missed the opportunity to draw Claws into the final tableau. (I guess I should have known when he insisted on showing up in the drawing at all, even standing uncomfortably in the back, that he was going to end up more important to the scene than I thought.) The scan is... actually pretty close to actual size which is why I had so much trouble getting all their facial features in. Lessons learned. Also, embraces with aliens with multiple limbs? Very hard!
I can certainly tell why there's no Spots the Space Marine graphic novel. This took me an hour and I haven't even inked or painted it yet. Nevertheless, I really like it. So here it is...! Gun is Done!

At last! The gun is done, thanks to Lostreach's excellent reference photos. Now I can move on to fixing her body and doing the armor... and deciding on what I want in the background. She's only partially dressed so it's either the armory or one of the corridors in the base.

Spots Montage, Con't

And work on the montage continues. I'm nearly done with the bottom there, which leaves me with the top to do. I think it's really coming together.
Claws is the big guy on the left. Beside him is Scythe. Behind Scythe are Fang2 (shorter) and Fang (taller), and Peaches behind them holding up a gun. The two guys in suits are Hairball and Whiskers. Spots, Cleaner Gun

Cleaning up the gun. Paused on the stock, grip and other things sticking up off it because I need to double-check the perspective. Amusingly if you look to the left there you can see one of the lines where my art advisor and I were drawing in the horizon and vanishing points.

Samuel-Colt (Circles within Circles)

It's funny... when I was laying down the lines for this initially I got bored, and this was the fourth or fifth time my attempt to draw Samuel-Colt had bored me so I asked myself (drawing circles within circles), why? And realized: it was because I was trying to draw a typical bug alien. Making him look like a terrestial bug, with the segments and the hard edges and... the end result was, he looked just like every other bug alien people have been making since we've been trying to scare each other with bug aliens.
So I stepped back and said, 'hey with that' and decided to make him... otherworldly, unlikely, all curves and anatomy that couldn't possibly work, stilts and edges without feet or hands (he can grow them back after he's done with the picture), so that a human staring at him would be uneasy, thinking 'that can't possibly work' and yet... it does. And I like it so much better. So, Samuel-Colt, Art Nouveau-esque, all curves and uncanny angles. I really liked how this came out, circles within circles. Peaches and Avril

Moving toward a mini-splash page for Part 2, with Peaches and Avril and Samuel-Colt in the back there. Paul's eye needs fixing. Peaches looks just about right, though (complaining about growing her bangs out, at that, and that they're not quite long enough to get into her ponytail without bobby pins).

The Gun

I'm intending this one as an advertising piece for the serial so I'm trying to finish refining it so I can paint it. My biggest stumbling block to this point was the gun, which I wanted to look slightly futuristic (and slightly designed-by-aliens-for-humans) without looking outlandish; so last night I sat down surrounded by four magazines with names like "Tactical Weaponry" and "Guns and Ammo" and hacked at it until it looked the way I wanted. I'm pretty happy with it now, so I'll clean up the line-work and add some details before moving on.
From here, working my way "down", I need to make her waist and back bigger, clean up the bottom of the suit, then add the Armory door at her shoulder (since she's apparently only half-dressed in that armor...!). Paul Avril

My swag at Paul Avril comes pretty close except for the eyes, which I haven't decided how to fix yet. It's hard to put across that "he's got long lashes" thing without making it look like mascara. I'll ponder it a while.
